MARK MCGINNIS - "Teller of Stories and Creator of Things"

WHO IS MARK MCGINNIS?

There once was an eighth grader in Seattle, listening to Kurt Cobain, wearing Ken Griffey Jr’s backwards hat and watching the Supersonics make it to the 96’ finals. 20 years later, that kid starts a fashion brand and moves to LA, sells at Paris & Tokyo Fashion Week every season and designs for the biggest artists in the world.

That eighth grader was Mark McGinnis. In a lot of ways, it still is. Since starting the brand at 26 in his parents’ basement, he has brought a unique combination of hard work and an imaginative vision to 10+ seasonal collections, collaborations, custom pieces and all types of creative projects.

His work drags classic cultural motifs through a process of distortion and re-construction, creating rebellious yet sophisticated silhouettes.

Not afraid to make a statement or a mistake, Mark has been a leader in the new generation of creators making an impact on our culture and world.

WHAT CAN THIS GUY DO?

CREATIVE DIRECTION

APPAREL DESIGN

COSTUME DESIGN

as well as... Sketching, Technical Drawing, Sourcing, Patterning, Cutting & Sewing, Drawing, Painting, Small Business Strategy, Content Production and much more.

CREATIVE DIRECTION

As the Creative Director for The Incorporated for 7 years, I have not only directed the seasonal collections, capsules and collaborations, but countless photoshoots, campaigns, short films, pop-ups, activations and runways shows. Whether for my own brand or a client, it is always my goal to find the essential thread of truth and communicate that in the most powerful form.

APPAREL DESIGN

After designing 15 full collections and producing thousands of pieces of clothing, I have the confidence and resources to create anything I can envision. I can personally design, source, cut, sew and print, but now I usually leave that to the professionals and manage the projects depending on the scale, quality and details.

COSTUME DESIGN

Many of our clients are looking for something unique for their performances, films, events or shoots, giving me the unique challenge and opportunity to design with someone else’s story in mind. These costumes have taken many different forms and scaled from single artists to dance troupes of 50+, but I always strive to deliver a message and make an impact.

BAD BUNNY for WRESTLEMANIA

For Bad Bunny’s appearance on the finale of WWE, he wanted a look that would be militant, eye-catching and bring some attention to his new album, YHLDMDLG. We had recently done a cargo strap vest for his music video, BOOKER T, so weincorporated that into the final look. The final look was an extended patent leather with 3D letters down the spine, leather pants and an updated vest of leather and cargo straps. The look lives on as the wardrobe for Bad Bunny’s Madame Toussauds’ wax figure.

BILLIE EILISH for HAPPIER THAN EVER TOUR

Billie has worn a lot of my work over the years, so for her new tour, we wanted to collaborate in a much bigger way. We took imagery from both of our extensive visual libraries and mashed them together with ink, paint, dye and anything else I could find to make 30+ 1 of 1 outfits. What we came up with was a series of outfits that not only made a visual impact, but represented the feeling of the live show.

METRO BOOMIN for COACHELLA

I had a week to make 65 outfits for Metro Boomin’s Coachella dancers. They wanted an advanced military look that had hanging elements that would move with the dancers. I played with layers and ropes that would bulk up the silhouette and swing and sway with the dancers as the spun and dropped.

It worked.

JACK HARLOW for MTV VMAs

Jack Harlow needed a high fashion prison uniform for his first VMAs alongside Lil Nas X. Pulling inspiration from the music video, we went with an eye catching jet black stretch pleather that contrasted well with X’s pink outfit and stage.

TRAE YOUNG for SPRITE

My mission? Willy Wonka meets Kanye West for the tv spot fo Sprite’s new bottle design.

My answer? A giant, PVC puffer with a silhouette pulled from the Sprite bottle itself.
